Downloading shared photos from iPhone to computer

I have shared photos from my and my wife's iPhones. Hoe do I download them onto the hard drive of my computer? I've tried using Image Capture, but it takes way too long. The directions on the Apple site don't seem to work.

By "We have synched our pictures" do you mean that you have used iCloud Photos to synchronize your Photos Libraries with the Library at iCloud.com, or do you mean that you have transferred pictures around in some other way? It would help if you answered my questions.

…When I launch Photos on the Mac with one of the iPhones attached, I see the photos in the Library.

Do you mean that you see the "Import" dialog, like this?

If you are using iCloud Photos to synchronize Photos on your devices, then the pictures should already be on your Mac. In that case you can select them and use File>Export>Export nn Photos to export them to a folder.

If you're not using iCloud Photos, then of course, you have to import them into Photos to use Photos to export them.

I you want to copy pictures without importing them to Photos, then you can use the app Image Capture that's in the Applications folder.

iCloud Photos is clearly the easy way.

There seem to be a lot of things you haven't told us, and so it an be difficult to be helpful. Though you didn't mention it, I am inferring from your mention of Image Capture that you are using a Mac--is that right? Where did these "shared Photos" come from? Where are these pictures on your phone-- in Photos or in Files or on a web site?

  • Are you using iCloud Photos to synchronize your devices? If so
  • …Do you have “Optimize Storage” checked in Photos’ Settings
  • …Do you have more than 10% free storage on your iCloud account?
  • What is your storage on this iPhone? At Settings>General>iPhone Storage, my phone says 50.5 GB of 128 GB used. What does yours say? Do you have more than 10% free storage on your iPhone?
  • Has this problem always existed, or did it just start? Can you think of anything that changed that might affect your device?

I use iCloud to synchronize my Photos Libraries, so I haven't done the cable thing in a long time. But I just plugged it in, and my phone's name appeared in the sidebar of Finder and also in the sidebar of the Photos app. Does that happen for you? Since I use iCloud Photos, I don't get any other options-- what do you see, exactly?
