Apple Watch Fitness App Overreacts

This is not that big an issue, but it is annoying to me. I have my fitness app setup to display split pace and average pace. My goal is 15-min/mile for a decent walk and I use that data to help pace myself during my walk. The other day I noticed that if I stop for a car, or to tie my shoe, or whatever, the split pace goes up as one would expect. But the average pace goes up as well - a lot. For example, if I am at a 15:12 avg pace and stop for 3-seconds, the avg pace will go up into the 16's or higher and even though I get right back into the exact same rhythm and pace as before I stopped, the avg pace will end up significantly higher than if I had not stopped. I just can't believe that stopping for 2 or 3 seconds can change an avg pace from 15:23 to 15:52 over the course of the mile.

Have you tried to calibrate the watch to see if the issue persists?

Calibrate your Apple Watch

  1. While wearing your Apple Watch, go to a flat, open outdoor area that offers good GPS reception and clear skies.
  2. If you have Apple Watch Series 2 or later, you just need your Apple Watch.* If you have Apple Watch Series 1 or earlier, bring your iPhone for GPS. Hold your iPhone in your hand, or wear it on an armband or waistband.
  3. Open the Workout app, then tap Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run. To set a goal before starting, tap the More button.
  4. Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.
