ApplicationStorageExtension and GarageBandStorageExtension using up massive amounts of CPU

I have noticed that there are dozens of mostly “ApplicationStorageExtension” and "GarageBandStorageExtension" processes running and taking up tons of CPU (Sequoia 15.6.1). I’m not even running Garage Band or the Podcasts app, and some cursory research shows that ApplicationStorageExtension is only supposed to be running if you have the Storage tab on About This Mac open, which I don’t. Rebooting the machine fixes it temporarily, but it recurs within a short time of the machine running again. When this happens, the machine also beachballs for 10-20 seconds on any file access dialog box. Any thoughts about how to troubleshoot this?
