APPLE Updates resets all my alerts to default of message 1 day in advance

Question

I find using Messages as a form of alert in Calendar is not workable for me for a number of reasons.

Accordingly I set all alerts to email and they stay in my inbox until I deal with the issues then I delete the email.

APPLE every time it updates the OS system on my Macbook it resets the alerts to Message format 1 day in advance.

This is very annoying and very arrogant on their part.

Is there a way to stop this?
