"Natural Scrolling" setting is showing inverted behaviour on my MacBook Air M4

The "Natural Scrolling" setting in System Settings is behaving in an inverted manner. When the setting is toggled to OFF, the trackpad's scrolling behavior is ON (content moves with fingers). When the setting is toggled to ON, the trackpad's scrolling behavior is OFF (content moves in the opposite direction of fingers).

This issue persists across reboots and is not resolved by simple toggling.

Troubleshooting Performed:

  1. I have deleted the trackpad preference files (com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist).

2.I have confirmed with defaults read -g com.apple.swipescrolldirection that the system is correctly recording a value of 0 for OFF and 1 for ON, but the trackpad's behavior remains the opposite.

3.Created a new profile and safeboot but the problem persists.
