AirPlay PDF or static object from iPad to TV for extended display

Is there any way or any app to cast/extend (Not mirror) a static reference object such as a PDF, to an external TV/monitor via Airplay (or bluetooth, HDMI etc) ?


I want to cast a research paper PDF onto my TV as visual reference and perform handwritten derivations on my Ipad using my pencil. I am aware we can Airplay video and pictures (and even slides in Keynote) in an extended display format, but I am unable to cast a PDF or a webpage etc onto my TV. (To reiterate, I am Not referring to mirroring, since then I can't do any Apple pencil calculations on the Ipad simultaneously.


I believe this use case is unique to the Ipad and and its pencil setup, so I am curious if this feature is unavailable and why.

If your have an iPad that supports Stage Manager, you can use this feature to flexibly display different App windows on both your iPad screen and external display. You can use Stage Manager on these iPad models:

  • iPad Air 13-inch (M3)
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M3)
  • iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)
  • iPad Air 13-inch (M2)
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M2)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd to 6th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st to 4th generation)
  • iPad Air (5th generation)


With iPadOS 16.2 or later, you can use Stage Manager to move apps and windows to an external display from these iPad models:

  • iPad Air 13-inch (M3)
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M3)
  • iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)
  • iPad Air 13-inch (M2)
  • iPad Air 11-inch (M2)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th and 6th generation)

Update : I was able to extend screen from iPad to my samsung smart TV via usb-c-to-HDMI and cast a PDF on it. It is possible to have basic touchpad control to extended screen via accessibility-virtual touchpad option in iPad settings, however it lacks scroll or zoom touchpad gesture support.

I will try a bluetooth mouse and keyboard tomorrow to see if it can provide seamless extended screen control, and if so, this successfully concludes my attempt to find an iPad to TV extended screen control option. Thank you @LotusPilot and everyone else for your help and inputs !

Consider that your TV is not a touch screen - and as such, you will require either a compatible TouchPad or Mouse - and ideally an external keyboard - to effectively and seamlessly interact with both the iPad and its display and external monitor/TV.


The Apple Magic TrackPad works really well with a Stage Manager combo - and is available in black or white to suit your aesthetic preference:

A basic three-button and scroll-wheel Bluetooth Mouse works well if you prefer a mouse. Don't bother with a sophisticated third-party mouse with multiple programable buttons as they are not fully supported by iPadOS.


For my own setup, I use the Apple Magic TrackPad with a Logitech K380 wireless keyboard (grey). Other Bluetooth keyboards that have the Apple-style secondary functions and command keys should be just as usable.
