FCPX Connected Clips - 2 Angle Project

I'm a barely-started FCP newbie with several years' iMovie experience, and a two-angle project that I'd love to use the FCPX Multicam features to edit, but it looks like using Connected Clips for cutaways would suffice until I am ready for Multicam work.

The clips are shots taken of a stage play and are very long (30 minutes or so, each).

Will Connected Clips for cutaways work well or am I asking for trouble?

I'm working through Ripple tutorials if that helps. (I'm finding them a little out of date on some details but it's been helpful so far.)

If you'll be doing more of these types of projects in the future, experiment with multicams after you get this one out the door. Multicams are quite powerful and really pretty simple once you get the hang of creating one. Multicam editing workflow in Final Cut Pro for Mac - Apple Support

Essentially the steps are:

  • Import your media
  • Add metadata to each clip in the inspector to identify different camera media (CamA, CamB, etc.) This helps FCP determine how to organize the angles in the multicam.
  • Select all the clips in the browser you want to be part of the multicam, right-click and choose Create multicam.
  • Name it, set the specs, etc.
  • If your cameras didn't record with timecode, enable Use audio for synchronization

If you double-click your newly created multicam clip in the browser, it will open in an Angle Viewer in the timeline area. In the Angle Viewer you can adjust the sync if needed, add more angles and clips, graphics, stabilize, color correct, etc.

Drop the multicam clip into a project timeline and use keyboard shortcuts (1, 2, 3, etc.) to choose which of the angles is visible. When switching angles you can switch just the video, the video and audio, or just the audio.

Have fun!
