Fixing 'A software update is required to use this startup disk' error during macOS reinstallation

Hey everyone,

I could really use some help. I've tried everything I can think of — booting from USB, connecting directly to the router via Ethernet cable, and more — but I'm still stuck.

The issue is with a MacBook A1989. Every time I start it, it goes straight into Internet Recovery. When I proceed, I get the error: “A software update is required to use this startup disk.” If I click "Yes," it tries to update, restarts, and then shows the exact same message again — stuck in a loop. And its still connected with the Ethernet cable the whole time-

I tried using Command + R to access Disk Utility, but that didn’t work, so I found a workaround and managed to reinstall macOS. I even erased the entire internal disk beforehand. Still, the same error appears once the installation is complete.

I also tried installing macOS onto an external SSD and a bootable USB drive — no luck there either.

I’ve recorded a video of the full process (with the loading parts cut out), which I can share.

So my question is: Does anyone know how to fix the “A software update is required to use this startup disk” error, or how to get this MacBook running again?

Thanks in advance!

It appears an A1989 is a MacBook Pro 13" (2019) model.

Since you have already erased the SSD....try a DFU Firmware Restore which unfortunately requires access to another Mac currently running macOS 15.x Sequoia. This will reset the T2 security chip, system firmware, and internal SSD. If successful, then you will need to install macOS through Internet Recovery Mode. FYI, it can be tricky & difficult to get the Mac into DFU Mode....you must follow the instructions in the Apple article exactly (timing is critical).

If you still encounter issues after the DFU Firmware Restore, then most likely the Logic Board has failed. Do not spend any money on repairs for multiple reasons.....the money spent on repairs is better put towards a new laptop.
