Persistent 'Required managed update' and 'Other Users are Logged in' notifications on MacBook Pro

Every day when I open my 15". 2017 MBPro I get on all three partitions these false warnings to Log out from other users and install 'a required managed update'. But when clicked on, the machine tells me it's all up to date. Annoying! This has gone on for very many months. Running Ventura 13.7.7.

Original Title: 'Required managed update' and 'Other Users are Logged in' notifications warnings appear daily for over a year.

No, it isn't done by either. It's done by a 79 year old who has had Macs since 1991. I used to mend software faults in the early years but have done nothing like that for some 15 years so not up with the new stuff.

BTW when I searched with my previous question nothing came up as an answer. Then after posting and being given a better title, I went back through the past 2 years or so of posts on Ventura and found out that a lot of people had been having the same problem.

It appears that an answer that is often helpful is to chuck a preference in the library so it gets replaced, just like we used to do in the Nineties. One person said he had to chuck it several times before it worked. Other said it worked for them at once. Apple has ended the commenting on those earlier posts re the problem.

A good example of a key answer is Ron523 on July31, 2023 under the general title of Required Managed Update.

I tried this and YES, it works! I think it's the answer to this annoying problem .... This is the procedure I followed ...

  1. Save a backup copy of /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist on the Desktop or somewhere else in case you need to reinstate it (I didn't need it, but a good precaution)
  2. Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
  3. Reboot computer
  4. Go to System Settings/General/Software Update and select your preferred method for regular updates

Now, the annoying message which was coming every day is no longer there and everything seems fine. I did this a few days ago and have used the computer a lot since and there don't seem to be any problems and the message no longer appears.

I'll let you know if it works if I manage to carry this out successfully, or not!
