In Apple’s Podcasts app, older unplayed episodes are disappearing from the feed.

I’ve found that with several podcasts (particularly ones that have run for many years with hundreds of episodes) their content is vanishing. It appears as though episodes are being removed from the app in the order of oldest-to-newest. As of today, shows like “Attitudes!” show nothing earlier than episode #577, “Something about the Beatles” begins with episode #123, and so forth. These lost episodes are not being marked as ‘played’ and are not searchable even by exact title… Notably, my ‘Saved’ episodes are all still available in my account, but when I try searching for them by name, I get nothing; they’re just wholly erased from the feed. These episodes all seem available elsewhere or on the show’s own sites, just not here on Apple. So what’s up? Is this a bug, or some kind of intentional design? Thank you for any insight or solutions!

Hi @SoyDogNY -

I checked the Beatles podcast you referenced and confirmed I’m seeing the same thing. The show only lists a total of 206 episodes available via Podcasts app, with #123 (dating from 2017.10) being the oldest.

Presumably you can still find your saved episodes because you retain the downloads on your hard drive.

As I understand, there are a number of factors that might influence why older episodes were archived and/or a feed limit has been set (for example, mitigating load time lag for new eps).

The decision most likely originates from the content creator end. I recommend reaching out to them directly. And if you do, plz consider following up here with what you learn. I’m curious.

I appreciate the thorough response! That all makes sense to me, having many possible reasons for the archiving of old episodes rather than one issue across the board.

Pretty disappointing to miss out on content that was previously available and in queue, but I suppose I’ll have to try reaching out to each creator as you suggested; I’ll update if I do find anything of note… Otherwise I can see what might be available on other platforms.

Thank you!
