Redirecting emails after switching ISPs

I fired Spectrum/Charter due to monthly bills amounting to $250 and subscribed to a different ISP. But, little did I realize, my iPhone and iPad email address, t*********@charter.net will not work anymore. Now I cannot get email sent to t**********@charter.net. I am trying to find a job as a remote Technical Writer and have job postings sent to t*********@charter.net. Can anybody tell what I can do about this nightmare? By the way, the new ISP is Earthlink.

I would like to keep "t********@charter.net" if I can. I do have another email address I use -- t**********@capalert.com as the "main" email address to which most replies come. Is there a way to have all emails to t*********@charter.net sent automatically to t*********@capalert.com? Also, I have my username as t*********@charter.net on many websites. That will not be a problem, right? Using t*********@charter.net as a username is just a string of characters and not necessarily an email address, right?

One or more of you folks have always had an answer to my issues -- I purely hope someone can do it again! A bold and hearty thank you in advance!

That's the way emails work - any time anyone sends a message to your @charter.net email address, it goes to Charter's servers and they work out what to do with it. In this case, there's no longer an active account, so they bounce the message.

You might try reaching out to Charter to see if there's some kind of minimal service level they'll offer which will keep the email address active, even while you're not using their service. At least for long enough for you to update all references to that email address to some other domain.

Again, this is something that only Charter can do. The message sent to your @charter.net address is going to their server, and are the only ones who can configure their server to forward the message to any other address.

Well... yes, and no...

While, technically, the email address is just a string of characters, many web sites conflate username and email address, such that they assume they are the same thing. Two-factor authentication (e.g. they send an email link to confirm login), or clicking the 'forgot password' link, for example, may send a message to the old @charter.net email address if they're assuming your 'username' is your email address. In short, you have to look at this on a case-by-case basis for each site.

you can't keep the @charger.net email address. That belongs to charter and you are no longer paying them for service.

You can't forward them from that address to another because that address no longer belongs to you.

Get a new email address. Preferably one that is not tied to a specific ISP. outlook.com or gmail work just fine, though I personally avoid anything google related...

"I have my username as *****@charter.net on many websites. That will not be a problem, right? Using *****@charter.net as a username is just a string of characters and not necessarily an email address, right?"

This is correct.

Um... no, because you don't control the charter.net email account any more. It probably no longer exists at all now that you are no longer paying charter for service.

That's how it works. You don't pay for it, you don't get service. Just like if you don't pay your electric bill, the electric company will shut off the power, or if you cancel your cable tv service, they shut off the service.
