Mail; attachments as icons - not full page previews ...

Hi - I'm on an iMac, OS Sonoma. In email replies to my senders, where I need to attach files, it seems that they always get inserted as full previews of the file - like when I attach a pdf, it will display the whole first page, and nearly as large as the original. I'd like to have my files show as little icons - I don't want to waste space in the email with such large images. If I have multiple files, they all display this way in the body of the email.

I'm sure there's a setting somewhere for this, but I can't find it. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You have no little-to-no control over this.

The way recipients view email attachments is 100% up to their email client.

Some will show attachments inline.

Some will show them as thumbnails that need to be clicked.

Mail.app will generally show images inline, but there is no guarantee that the recipient will see it the same way.
