Random question mark appearing at startup on a 2012 Macbook Pro

My Macbook Pro ( 13 inch Mid 2012) some times shows the question mark symbol at startup, but if you let it turned off for a while, it starts like nothing again and for weeks or months remains normal. It has a new disk (HP SSD S650) but the problem occurred before that, I used to believe it was cause of a USB hub or just that its getting old (thus the new SSD), or that I used to have it in an inclined position (45º) for years, but not anymore (10º). I'm really puzzled since it's not a consistent issue, why would it happen so sporadically?

I will add— I guess the generic fault in the SATA cable "could" cause this angle issue(?) not heard that one....

however did you replace the SATA cable when you installed the new drive—Always recommended on the mid 2012's

It is a known point of failure, age, abrasion, wear, especially intermittent faults like yours

Internal SATA cables are actually not cables but flexible circuit boards, usually mylar, with printed circuit traces taking the place of wires. This type of cable can experience cracks in traces due to aging, heat, vibration, impact or abrasion. They can be damaged quite easily if the unit is mishandled during assembly or re-assembly.

You can recheck the user preference: Search your user setting for Startup Disk, select it again.

Change your Mac startup disk

A SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

not sure what you are referencing "the angle issue" this I would point to a display cable failing, intermittent fault if it is a display issue you are having.

May well be the end of the line for your old work horse mid 2012.

The question mark at startup means a problem finding something to boot.

If your Mac starts up to a question mark - Apple Support

Failing hardware is more likely, as storage corruptions aren’t (usually) transient.

You can try Apple Diagnostics, but they're not great at finding transient problems. (Few diagnostics are.)

Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support
