Persistent double-press issue with Siri Remote (3rd gen, USB-C) on Apple TV

Hi all,

I want to document a persistent hardware issue with the Siri Remote (3rd generation, USB-C) and ask how widespread this is.

What happens

  • Touch gestures are disabled; I’m navigating only with the physical clickpad.
  • single click often registers as two moves, most frequently to the right (and sometimes down).
  • This is my second Siri Remote with the exact same behavior, each failing after roughly one year of normal daily use in the living room.
  • A seldom-used remote in the bedroom does not show the issue.

Why I believe this is a hardware durability problem

I’m an electronics engineer. The behavior matches wear/“bounce” in the click mechanism (e.g., carbon dome/contact wear). In short: one physical press generates two electrical events. Based on my experience, a more robust switch design (e.g., SMD tact switches or a different dome spec) would likely hold up better to daily use.

Why this matters

At ~€60 per remote, buying a new one every 12 months is not acceptable. And replacing it with the same design doesn’t solve the underlying problem if it fails again after a year.

Asking the community

If you have seen the same double-press behavior, please share:

  1. How long did it take to appear (months of use)?
  2. Which direction(s) on the clickpad are affected?
  3. Which Siri Remote generation (Lightning vs. USB-C)?
  4. Did anyone open/clean/replace the clickpad and achieve a lasting fix? (Describe briefly.)

Asking Apple

Could Apple please provide an official statement on this pattern and whether there’s a revised clickpad design to address durability? A straightforward exchange doesn’t help if the next unit fails the same way after ~12 months. A goodwill repair or a sturdier revision would be the right outcome for customers using Apple TV daily.

Thanks to everyone who can add data points. The more cases we collect, the clearer the pattern becomes.
