Suddenly my MacBook Pro and my iPad have vertical lines from top to bottom off to the side of the screens. How can o get rid of the lines?

Vertical Lines on a Device:
Take a full-screenshot of each, then open them in the Photos app on the device, itself. If you see these, then it is an an issue with he Operating System. If not, then it is a hardware issue.

Set up a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store. There, it will be diagnosed, and you'd be provided with your options.
Faulty Devices:
A. Has it Been Less than a Year?:
How old are these devices, since the date of purchase? Did you purchase it from Apple? Did you purchase warranty with it? Contact Apple Support to get the prices. If found to be a fault device then it would likely be nothing on you. But, only Apple has the ultimate say in prices. So, contact them ASAP.
B. Perhaps this is a Faulty Device?:
Note that you have a one-year, out-of-the-box, limited-warranty with this, if purchased from Apple. So, either return these (you have 14 days to do so), or contact Apple Support, seeing if you can get these replaced.
