Show title disappeared on pause screen of Apple TV

Hey! We are having some issues with the video playback Ul on our Apple TV box. I tried looking for a solution but couldn't find anything so I was hoping someone else has solved it before. For context, I am not talking about the streaming service, but about the Apple TV Box.

Basically when watching a movie or show we used to be able to see the title of the show and so on when we swiped up on the circular button on the remote. And for whatever reason now this doesn't work anymore. Now it just shows the playback time and no other information about she how. The remote fell down the back of the couch so I suspect we might have pressed some button combination? while fishing it out, as the titles stopped showing up since then.

We are streaming the videos directly from a shared network drive in case that helps.

Thanks in advance for your help

So I recon that this is about Home Sharing through the Computers app?

Any information on the media would be what was added as MP4 tags, else there’s only the filename to go by.

If you use a different method of accessing the network drive, then please specify.

Apple TV (3rd generation)

The ‘legacy’ models Apple TV box (A1378, A1427, A1469) haven’t seen a software update in years, so the apps on there shouldn’t change on what they show for media information.

If you instead have a later model (e.g. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)), then the software version could potentially make a difference for Home Sharing or other apps as well. What is the system software version of this Apple TV box?

VLC app

Alright. Now I know what to replicate. :)

Indeed pausing a video in (the current version of) this app will not show the title of the media. (I don’t recall the details of how that looked 3 months back or longer ago.)

The current version of this app for the Apple TV box is v3.6.6 per 2025-07-03.

They use their own playback software routines, which differs from (expands on) what Apple’s built-in player software is capable of, and may therefore look and behave differently.

You can try contacting the developer team of this app, to share with them what you would like to see differently in an upcoming version.

Hey! Thank you so much for replying!

I probably should have included more details from the start. Sorry, this is my first time posting here.

Basically the way we have it is we connect the apple tv box via HDMI cable to the TV, we then turn on Apple TV and choose the VLC app. In the VLC app itself we connect to our PC via the WiFi, choose the folder with the media in it and play it on the TV.

We have apple tv box model A2169, online it says that it is Apple TV 4K (2. Generation). The software version is 18.6.
