How do I get my Macbook Pro 2024 to read all SD cards?

Half work and half do not. They all work in my Mac Studio and cheap USBC stick SD readers on my MacBook Pro. So the SD cards are working but the reader only works with some SD cards. Is there a way to fix it? I would like it to work on all SD cards. Please don't erase my question Apple.

Seems like it's the micro SD to SD card adapter. I guess the MacBook Pro is a bit more picky over the Mac Studio. I put the micro sd card that was not being recognized into the adapter that was working and it showed up. I may buy a couple regular SD cards since they are dirt cheap. Thanks for all the help

"Yes the card reader is there and sometimes works sometimes does not. Depends on which exactly the same sd card i insert. Same brand and size cards. They work on a usbc stick in the same mac. Also they work on my M1 mac studio. Is there any software side things i can try or is this just a hardware issue?"

Getting the Reader to Work:

A. Reinstall the macOS:

It seems your macOS might be corrupt. So, try reinstalling the macOS, seeing if it is then seen. Nothing would be deleted; it's just that missing and corrupt files with be reinstalled, and replaced, in the process. Go Here: How to Reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Supprot

B. Backup Fist:

IMPORTANT: Be sure you back up your Mac with Time Machine, prior to performing this reinstall. That way you will have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong afterwards/

My guess is that this is a hardware issue.

If this is a M4-family MacBook Pro, that implies that you would have purchased it in November 2024 or later, and that it would still be within the one-year limited warranty. You may want to bring the MBP to Apple or to an Apple Authorized Service Facility, while it is within warranty, for evaluation and for possible repair.

The formatting of SD cards— especially camera cards— is inconsistent across camera brands.

Before jumping any conclusions, open Image Capture (included with macOS) and see it recognizes the cards. Cards from my Nikon 5000 DSLR do not show in the Finder or the desktop, but look like this in Image Capture:

Seeing SD Cards on a Mac:

A. Deletion of your Question:

B. Verify if this is Insertion is Seen:

Hold down the option key, and then click on the Apple menu (top-left corner of your screen). Then, select System Information. Net, external the Hardware list. Finally, select "Card Reader". See if it is detected.

C. Single-Out this Device:

Are they reading on other devices? If so, then it is an issue with this Mac. If not, then it may be the cards themselves.

D. Turn Off the Lock Switch:

On the side of the SD card, there should be a little switch. Move it to the next position, seeing if they are readable.

It sounds like you are talking about a 14" or 16" MacBook Pro with a M4, M4 Pro, or M4 Max chip.

According to Apple, all of these have a SDXC card slot.

I would expect any of these to be able to read SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards, provided that the file system on the card was a recognizable one. I would not expect them to work with SDUC cards (cards with "more than 2 TB, up to 128 TB" of capacity). They also might not work with SD Express cards (cards designed to use super-high-speed PCIe bus interfaces whose speed exceeds that of even UHS-III).

When you say that the cards don't work – do you mean that they don't show up in the Finder at all (with the Finder settings configured to show cards on the Desktop and in Finder window sidebars)? Or that they do show up there, but it's just that the Mac doesn't always launch Photos to import pictures from inserted cards?
