2020 Macbook Pro Sequoia 15.6 runs when lid is closed

This problem has been going on for some time. I will put the Macbook Pro (2020 Intel, two ports) to sleep using the Apple menu, close the lid, and at some point it starts up and runs until the battery dies. I've put it into my bag and pulled it out an hour later and it is very hot, running down 80% of battery life.

Power Nap is turned off for both power adapter and battery power. Previously I had Power Nap enabled while it was on the power adapter, but a few weeks ago I turned it off entirely. No change in behavior.

I ran Activity Monitor and the CPU cycles were almost entirely in kernel. The CPU % of kernel_task was over 1300% (no typo, not sure how it does that).

Battery health is listed as normal: most of the time this Macbook stays plugged in on my desk, but since I lost my work computer in the last few months I've been taking it with me.

I've seen a few other folks who have had similar problems: any idea what is going on?

I suggest you try NOT choosing sleep, but ONLY use the lid-closing as the ONE signal for your Mac to sleep.

The reason I say that is, it is possible the lid-closing on an already-sleeping MacBook Pro might cause an interrupt, (indistinguishable frorm a lid-opening event) that would wake it up instantly.

You could confirm that yourself by opening the display an extremely small amount, enough to see if the display is lit up, but not enough so that it would actually wake if it were sleeping.

that number show 100 percent when you are using 100 percent of the compute power of ONE CPU.

When your Mac gets HOT, Kernel-task grabs additional time slices and runs a cool-down loop, built of very simple machine instructions that use very little extended power.

Interesting ideas. I do use a wireless Apple Keyboard, but got frustrated with the Magic Mouse when I played games, so switched to a wired Logitech. I also use an external monitor.

I can try turning the monitor off before disconnecting and see if anything changes. This has been happening after I use the computer away from my desk (ie no external devices) and I close it then. But perhaps it is still looking for those devices or something similar.
