Messages indicated I had started a group chat with 7-8 other people at 2am my time while I was asleep.

I saw this on my iPhone 14 Pro, running iOS 18.5.

"You started a group chat"

All the other people were unknown numbers to me, from other countries (+64, +49, +55 other codes, etc).

No messages were exchanged.

All the other people left before 6am when I woke up and saw this strange activity.

I just tried to find it to share a screenshot, and it has gone.

How worried should I be?

What steps should I take?

Change your Password on your Apple Account.

Change your Apple Account password - Apple Support

If someone knew your Password, then can sign into iMessage on their device and use it for Messages. After you change the Password, they will no longer have access. You can also go to Settings > [name on top], and scroll to the bottom to see devices that are signed into your account. If you see a device you do not recognize, tap to remove it, and follow that by changing your Apple Account Password.

Password are usually gained through phishing messages by people pretending to be Apple and you click a link and enter your Password believing you are dealing with Apple.
