MacBook Air 2020 with Sequoia 15.5 fails to play audio through native speakers

MacBook Air 2020

Sequoia 15.5

My MacBook does not play audio through its native speakers.

I am able to play audio through bluetooth devices.

If I quit coreaudiod then audio starts playing again until I either pause the audio source (the YouTube video, song etc) or close it. As soon as that happens audio stops playing out loud for anything on the device until I quit coreaudiod.

I performed a factory reset on the laptop this morning, but am still having this issue. ;

Thanks

Set your Mac Speakers as Default:

What is selected in System Settings? Selecting your MacBook Air Speakers, does that fix this?

  1. Go to: System Settings
  2. Select: Sound
  3. Select: MacBook Air Speakers for 'Output'

GUI Not Working as it Should:

See if update your Mac does the trick. Bug fixes will be included.

Important: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the update reinstall.

Update the macOS:

macOS 15.6 has been released. So, update your Mac.

  1. Go to: System Settings
  2. Select: General
  3. Click: Check for update button

Reinstall the macOS:

Nothing would be deleted. It's just that items that have become corrupted or deleted, would be replaced or reinstalled back to where they should be. Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support.

"Hi, thanks for your help so far. I have performed the above but am still getting no audio out, with the exception being for about 1 minute after I quit coreaudiod. Are there any other steps to try? Cheers"

Getting No Audio:

A. Boot in Safe Mode:

While booted in Safe Mode, Login Items do not open at login, and system files can be fixed. How to boot into Save Mode depend on your device: Start up your Mac in Safe Mode - Apple Support

B. Single-Out this User:

Create a new Administrator user, seeing if your still get this issue when you log into it. If not, then it is an issue pertaining to your current user. If so, then it is an issue with the entire macOS.

C. Getting Instal a macOS After Migration:

A. Reinstall the macOS:

It seems your macOS is now corrupt. So, try reinstalling the macOS, seeing if all completes. Go Here: How to Reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Supprot

D. Reinstall the macOS:

If nothing above works, then your should backup your Mac, and then reinstall the macOS. Nothing would be lost; it's just that missing system files and corrupt system files, will be reloaded and replaced, respectively.

IMPORTANT: Create a Backup First: Be sure you back up your Mac with Time Machine, prior to performing any major change, such as this reinstall. That way you will have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong afterwards.

Mac Speaker Audio Issues:

A. Try Resetting the Core Audio:

Type the following command in Terminal:

sudo killall coreaudiod

To get to Terminal go to: Applications > Utilities > Terminal

B. Single-Out this User:

For troubleshooting purposes, create a new Administrator user. Log into it, and then see if you get this error. If not, then it is an error with the current user. If so, then it is an error with the entire macOS. Trash this user once this has been tried.

C. Verify the Connection:

First off, see if the speakers, are even seen:

  1. Hold Down: the Option key
  2. Click: the Apple menu
  3. Expand: Hardware
  4. Select: Audio
  5. Look For: MacBook Pro Speakers
