Unable to save photos from Messages app via iCloud

my friend sent me two groups of photos over messages one with 12 and one with 72 I’ve been trying to save it for the past two days and all it says is “sent via iCloud saving 72 photos..” but then every time I go back into I have to reclick the button to save all of them. I have more than enough storage and have everything on photos set to sync and an iPhone 16 pro. I just want my photos but it won’t even let me individually save them.
