Wi-Fi calling no longer working on macOS Sequoia 15.5 and 15.6

Over the past week or so, WiFi calling on my MacBook Air (M4; macOS 15.5 and 15.6) no longer works. When I try to re-enable it, nothing happens. I can still make phone calls from my iPhone on my Mac when the phone is nearby, but can no longer do so via WiFi without the iPhone nearby. WiFi calling has been working well for years.

Looking for any ideas/suggestions. Thank you.

Resolved in my situation. At Apple's suggestion that my cellular provider had to enable wifi calling, I just got of a 1.5 hour call. Before getting too into the details (we checked all related settings), first —

  • on your iphone, turn on Airplane mode to disable wifi, cellular, etc.
  • on your mac, open facetime and attempt a phone call
  • the call processed on the mac as per normal experience
  • the macOS still showed the "waiting for wifi calling activation" message
  • remember to turn off Airplane mode...

My assumption given everything we did is that the facetime software has preference for a cellular connection that it tries first and if it is available, it will use the cellular path for the call handling ignoring the wifi path.

Steven Skorka, Thank you for writing this note as it helped point me to a resolution path.

Just tested the process on second (ipad w/cellular) and third (iphone) devices. Worked as well. Forgot to disclose that we have t-mobile service which include wifi calling in our package. Advice, if this test does not work, then do call your cellular provider.

Shame on Apple for blaming this on the mobile service providers. The agent I spoke with is submitting the procedure of checking their services as I write this. She was very patient.

I thought a bit more about this. The use case that Apple Facetime seems to have implemented in 15.6 is one that assumes cellular is available from the iphone until it is not; then and only then, does the mac switch to wifi calling. What made me re-think this is I have some places that I travel to regularly that have poor to no cellular service. In one of the poor cellular service locations, the fix was to do exactly what resolved it this time, i.e., essentially disable cellular, then the wifi call worked.

Do you have a different use case? Because the irritating thing perhaps is that it seems one cannot choose to use wifi only. I may be wrong, but I thought that in the past I was able to not worry about the phone, but was able to use the laptop to make wifi calls.

Previously, I have definitely been able to make WiFi calls whether I had a strong, weak or no signal at all. It never mattered historically. Perhaps with macOS 15.6 there was an update or small change made to FaceTime being used for WiFi phone calls. I’m also wondering whether Apple may be tweaking the code in advance of macOS 26, which will be implementing a full Phone app for the first time. Officer course, we have no way of knowing.

Should I get WiFi calling to work again, I will post to this thread again along with what, if anything, I did to get into work. Thanks again!

I have not been able to get WiFi calling to work as of today, similar to you. I have tried everything. I do have WiFi calling with my T-Mobile plan and have been using WiFi calling for years with that carrier. I'm relatively confident this is a macOS issue and my hope is that with the upcoming release of macOS 26, that will resolve the issue. My plan is to completely restore my MacBook Air to factory conditions and then set it up again as though I had just purchased it. I hope that helps but there's no way to know for sure until I go through the process.

I don't have an iPad on which to test but in the past, when I did have an iPad and occasionally, but rarely, had this problem, I was always able to make WiFi calls on the iPad, even if there were issues on the Mac. Issues on the Mac historically were always resolved by my turning off and then on WiFi calling on my iPhone for that device. Not this time.

A quick update for those who were on this thread. I just upgraded to macOS 26/Tahoe. The new Phone app now works with wifi calling. My guess is that the transition of wifi calling from the macOS 15 code base to macOS 26 "broke" wifi calling in Sequoia (this is pure supposition on my part). But everything seems to be working now. I thought I would mention this on the thread here.
