Apache not loading pages on localhost despite “Syntax OK” and clean setup on Mac

I'm trying to set up apache per instructions on a user tip here, which were also duplicated on a website. The checks the instructions give to check the server configuration come back "Syntax OK" , the test webpage loads fine directly in the browser, but when I try localhost I get a Safari can't open the page "because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection. This sometimes occurs when the server is busy. Wait for a few minutes, and then try again." I had an older version of MAMP (6.8 - the new 7.2 simply won't run), which I have uninstalled (supposedly), and I copied over original versions of the files MAMP had me change, so I *think* I'm starting fresh with these instructions. I've rebooted, restarted apache "gracefully". Still get the same error.

Anyone have help for this? I really prefer to test pages before uploading to the production server.

Thanks ~

Oh really? What website was that?

Perhaps MAMP scrambled your Apache config files.

Here is something you can try. Download VirtualBuddy from the DMG on this site. Setup a new virtual machine on your Mac with the same OS version that you are currently running. Try those instructions again and confirm that everything is working. Then you can compare the config files, paths, environment, etc. from the virtual machine and correct them on your host.

It's almost verbatim.

Thank you! That is a really good idea! If nothing else it can give me clean files. MAMP *claims* it doesn't affect anything outside its directory other than what I had to change to do server-side includes, but something's definitely off.

Thank you for your quick response!
