The MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) originally shipped with macOS 10.4.1 (Mojave). You can update it as far as the latest release of macOS 14 (Sonoma) – but no further. It is not compatible with macOS 15 (Sequoia), and won't be compatible with macOS 26 (Tahoe).

Newest compatible operating system: macOS Sonoma

I would strongly suggest that you download or update Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and GarageBand – while you still can. Current versions of these applications require some version of Sonoma or better; so I wouldn't rule out Apple raising the requirement to Ventura for any updates that they release after Tahoe comes out.

The good news is that Sonoma is one of the "most recent three" and still will be after macOS 26 (Tahoe) comes out this fall. Thus, your 2018 MacBook Air will likely be supported by vendors such as Adobe and Microsoft for another year or so. If you do not want to upgrade to a new Mac just yet, and there are applications like these that you want to get, this gives you an idea of how long you have to get them.

Some applications support more than just "the most recent three". These include

Current versions of these applications will run even on Big Sur, or in many cases, Catalina. It might be several years before the developers of these applications abandon Sonoma (and your 2018 MacBook Air).
