Monitor Connecting to MacBook Air Issue

Hi,

I have a HP24 F monitor and a MacBook Air.....I just bought a USB C connector for my mouse/keyboard and it has a for the monitor too.

The keyboard/mouse work and when I plug it in the MacBook goes black for a second and 'connects' to the monitor however the monitor screen is still completely black. If I unplug it, it then says cable has been plugged.

On the display button, once plugged in, it shows the connection to my monitor that I have so it seems like it's connecting, but nothing is displaying.....anyone have any ideas?
