Deleted photos keep reappearing in iMessage app

In messages I select a person and then tap info, there one will find photos sent and received. I select a photo to delete, delete it and when I reopen the message/ info not only does the deleted photo appear but it duplicates. Also, these photos that I want to permanently delete are not appearing in Messages in the settings. Also, I do not have this photo in my Photos -collection. Very frustrating since this is eating up the storage on my phone. I know I could just delete the message but they are family message threads. Appreciate any assistance. Thank you Here is an example:
