If you are recovering your older MacBook’s password, you are being asked for the File Vault Recovery Key.

This is not the same as the more recently implemented Apple Account Recovery Key.

The recovery key for File Vault was displayed on-screen ONCE - and hopefully recorded and saved in a safe location - back when the brand new computer was being initially setup.

Hope that detail helps jog your memory as where it might be stored.

Unfortunately, your prospects to regain access to your data are fairly bleak if you can’t find it or remember the password.

Here is the information provided about that FileVault Recovery Key you are being asked for:

Protect data on your Mac with FileVault - Apple Support

It was not turned on by default on your Mac, and when it was turned on, you were given the Recovery options to choose from. Apple does not save this key for you.

WARNING: Don’t forget your recovery key. If you turn on FileVault and then forget your login password and can’t reset it, and you also forget your recovery key, you won’t be able to log in, and your files and settings will be lost forever.
