Safari on macOS triggers wrong location notices when logging into Facebook

When we log into Facebook with Safari on macOS from our home in WI we keep getting notices from Facebook that we are logging in from locations far away (Texas, Chicago, etc). We've changed passwords numerous times and when we look at what devises we're logged into on Facebook it appears that we're only logged in on our home Mac. Is there something in our Mac location settings that needs to change? Our Mac is connected both wirelessly and via ethernet.

What location is reported by your IP Address when you look at this site:

https://whatismyipaddress.com/

It is not necessary to click any of those links about Hiding your IP Address or Updating your Location as they are just ads to install additional software at a price. It is only necessary to use the site to see how your IP Address is reported and we can then work from there.

  • Also when you open the Maps app, is your location reported correctly there?
  • Are you using iCloud Private Relay?

Okay, I think we are getting somewhere.

  • Start by turning off Private Relay at  > System Settings > [name on top] > iCloud > Private Relay.
  • Go to  > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. This should be turned on, along with the apps that are allowed to use it.
  • Then on that same page, click "Details" under System Services and turn on all options you see there.

You are certainly welcome to go back later and turn off settings for Locations that you do not want to allow, but the goal is to get it working correctly first. Restart your Mac and follow up with testing again on the sites where it was not working, checking the location reported on the "whatismyipaddress" page, and if your location is reported in Maps.

If it still is not working, then post the free EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting. This report contains no personal information, and will show anything installed on your Launch Folders that may be causing a conflict.
