I also recommend sending the tape(s) to a professional service and have the video(s) put on a USB FlashDrive.

So clearly:
You need an adapter of VHS to USB (around 1000$)
other way:
There might be some local video spots who will do the VHS -> MP4
and get it on your flash drive. I've done that When I found the old VHS cassette of my grandpa when he was in china. (It costed me sth around 20$)
Just search VHS to USB near me and you should find some shops like that
There is a large amount of YouTube videos that explain what is needed however to get the most of one you need to be more specific! iMacs have been made close to 30 years in hundreds of configurations so indicate the model year iMac you own and the type of vhs connections you have. You can probably find the hardware required on Amazon.
should NOT be anywhere in the neighborhood of $1000, maybe $150 max.
Video cassette may mean Beta, VHS, or even NTSC Hi8. Depending on the age of the Sony recorder, it may offer their iLink (Firewire 400), or USB connectors. Far too little information here such as the specific model of Sony device.
You would be better off having some local service provider do the transfer to a modern video format (e.g. MP4) on an exFAT formatted USB stick.
