Can't create a guest network

We have an older Airport Extreme (image below) that we just installed to replace one that was not working.

The previous one had a guest network but I can't set one up on the replacement. The instructions in Airport Utility simply don't work--no option appears for creating a guest network.

Is this a non-compatibility issue between newer OS and older Airport Extreme, or is there a setting that I need to change?

Sorry, but that model does not have a Guest Network option. You must be confusing it with another model.

I still have an A1143 here, and can verify that there is no Guest Network option on that model.

The older "flat" shaped AirPort Extreme models that do support a Guest Network option are:

A1301, A1354, A1408

Two things to consider:

  • The first version of the AirPort Extreme to support a Guest Network was the 3rd Generation model. Previous 1st and 2nd Generation versions did not have a Guest Network option at all.

  • Even if the AirPort Extreme was capable of providing a Guest Network, the AirPort had to be configured as the "main" DHCP and NAT router on the network. In other words, the AirPort would not even display a Guest Network option if it was set up in Bridge Mode on the network.

Could you get us the Model Number of the AirPort, or maybe you know which "generation" the AirPort might be?

The model number might be buried in the hard to read fine print on the bottom of the product. It will start with an "A" and will be followed by 4 numbers.

Sorry, forgot to include the information that there were 5 different versions of the "flat" AirPort Extreme, and they all looked identical. Same shape, same size, color, etc, so it is easy to get them mixed up on first glance.

The final version of the AirPort Extreme had a completely different look. It was known as the "tower" version since it looked like an 8" tall tower.
