Holding a Laptop on One Side:

I'd say it is not wise. There's nothing wrong with doing so. Keep it to yourself, and no one would penalize you for it. But, why would you do that? You might drop it. If it feels hot, on the other end, then power it off, and place it on a laptop cooler, keep it out of the corner of a room, and keep it out of out sunlight.

All things in moderation.

If you question whether it's okay to do a thing, don't make that thing a habit.

Is this something that you just can't help but do?

If you must move the laptop from one location to another, just close the lid and carry it as you would a book.

Safely Handling a Mac:

A. Using Two Hands:

Hardware is hardware, and if something is lose, then it might get damaged. Who knows? I'm always using two hand when lifting mine. You might want to consider going the same.

B. Use of a Sleeve:

For easy grabs, what I use is a sleeve, and then I take it out of it, when I need to use my Mac. Once done using my Mac, I let it cool for a bit, and then close the screen, placing it back in the sleeve.  What I use: MOSISO Laptop Sleeve - Amazon
