before you go changing your admin password...

Is this mac managed or have a profile installed?

you can see this from Terminal:

sudo /usr/bin/profiles -P

did you try running the update/upgrade from >System Settings>General>Software Update(?)

I would reboot into SafeBoot Mode and try again the software update from System Settings and compare your results.  Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support Login and test.

root privileges here would be as follows on -line in the Terminal:

sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R

(note: your psswd will not echo on screen type it in anyway, use the enter\return key to proceed.)

this will bypass the secure token/owner check from the Software Update pref pane and may well be an issue here.

I would be tempted to delete what install.app is in the Application folder, empty the trash and try again

If it is the full installer you are after See full installers:

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

for macOS 15.5

sudo softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 15.5

~15.28 GB in size when complete will be sitting in your Applications folder "Install macOS Sequoia.app"

you launch it/click it open like any other application.

From another similar question regarding the Terminal Command to download the Full Version of Sequoia 15.5

Can’t open .dmg or .zip files – “DiskImag… - Apple Community

Some say this is a Bug, some say this is a change that Apple Introduced and still others say this maybe be fixed in the next update to Sequoia

I know from personal experience, using a M2, M3 and M4 machines each running anything newer than Sequoia 15.3.1 - this will fail

Whatever this issue really is, only Apple could possibly answer
