Images from iPhone populate image capture screen, when importing to a Mac Studio M2. The image shows an image is imported, but it doesn't really import the file. Image is not recognized by editing app.
After rebooting I’ve gotten it to work. I’m importing dng files. And yes I’m putting them in a folder on the Mac. What I found is because the file size is in the 20 mb size I can only import one raw file at a time. And only about 5 or 6 images before the image capture app freezes. Perhaps a ram issue.
How did these dng files get on your iPhone? Not with the Camera app, for sure.
Are you using some third party app that stores these in the iPhone camera roll?
Maybe it would be better not to add them to the camera roll and instead use that app's container (something that you should be able to change in the settings).
If you do that, then you could use Finder, and not Image Capture, to transfer these files.
Here's an example (it's for a video application, but the same applies to other apps):
What is the image file type? JPEG? HEIC?
What is the "editing app" you are using?
Does the image open in Preview, or Quicklook on the Mac, or not at all?
What does it say in Finder regarding the image file size? Does it match the size indicated on your iPhone?
You need to tell Image Capture where to write the image(s). In Finder View menu, enable Show Path. If you cannot find images you just downloaded in Image Capture, then use Spotlight to assist:
kind:image dateadded:>07/01/2025
That will find any images added since that date.
What happens when you double-click on the image that you found? What imaging application are you using?
The setting for the dng files is in the camera settings for the iPhone, not a separate app.
proraw is a 10bit linear dng format that the iPhone uses for greater dynamic range and file information. That file opens in photoshop raw and I have more control over the file when editing.
I have been a professional photographer for over 50 years, and have had the iPhone since it was introduced. My biggest gripe is that I can’t drag my camera files to the folder on my computer. Every camera that I own does that without any issues. Apple don’t make this so complicated, seems like after every update more issues. Any I’m glad it gives you guys something to do!

I have an iPhone 16, and it took me a long while to realize why I could not find these RAW settings... they are only available in the Pro models.
I understand the frustration about not being able to drag directly the files.
A possible workaround would be to use a different camera app that would store its files not in the Camera Roll.
I know that such apps exist, loke Camera+, that allow one to save either to the Camera Roll, the app's own space (or both). In that case, you would be able to drag directly in the Finder, as I've shown before.
I do not know how this or other camera app compares, in terms of features, to the built-in one.
iPhone 15 Pro Max does NOT import Photos in image capture macOs Sequoia 15.5
