Third party AntiVirus is not recommended— it typically does nothing but add issues to the macOS and competes directly with Apple’s own built in security:

Are you getting pop-up notifications in the upper-right-hand of your screen, telling you that you have viruses?

Those are scam notifications being sent to you by Web sites. The scammers often include copies of the System Settings icon to try to fool you into thinking that it was your Mac or Apple who sent them. On Windows machines, these notifications have a different, more Windows-like appearance, but it's still the same old scam. The goal is to panic you into contacting criminals posing as "tech support" for "help" (in ripping you off), or, at the very least, to panic you into buying some "security" app that will do nothing to solve the non-existent "problem."

See the "Stop Unwanted Notifications" user tip for instructions on how to block these in Safari.

"Tech support scammers may try to trick you with a pop-up window that appears on your computer screen. It might look like an error message from your operating system or antivirus software, and it might use logos from trusted companies or websites. The message in the window warns you about a security issue on your computer and tells you to call a phone number to get help.

If you get this kind of pop-up window on your computer, don’t call the number. Real security warnings and messages will never ask you to call a phone number."
