Cannot record voice on Final Cut Pro with external mic

I want to record a voice over using my external device, a REM USB Fireface UCX interface. The interface itself is working fine and I use it all the time for recording into Logic Pro.

In FCP when I go make a voice recording it works fine if I choose the inbuilt mic. I am able to choose the Fireface, it is obviously recognised as it shows in the list. However since a few days when I click on the red button nothing happens. I did some recording last week and it worked fine, i.e. after clicking the button I get the countdown and record audio. But when I tried today nothing, no countdown.

I double checked it is still working fine in Logic.

The same issue happens if I make the Fireface the audio input in sound settings, then choose "System" in FCP.

To summarise

  • FCP recognises the device but will not record. (no countdown)
  • Logic records fine
  • FCP worked until today, there have been no updates recently, nothing has changed on the system

Anyone please help? Thanks

As always, when the application misbehaves, it's worth a try deleting its preferences.

To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

Found the solution, or at least a workaround.

It seems that it will record via the Fireface but only if it's also selected as the output device.

I assume this must be a bug because in either Logic Pro or in the MacBook Pro sound settings you can record via the Fireface with it set to a different output to a different device, e.g. built in Mac speakers

All I need now is find out why my username has changed randomly!
