Apple Watch stopped recording GPS Data

On July 6th, my Apple Watch 5 running Watch OS 10.6,1 stopped recording GPS data. It worked fine the day before. I’ve looked through similar issues on the Community forum but everything seems correct, but most entries were from 2022. The distance is properly recorded in the HealthFit app, which is a third party app, but the route is not shown. Screen says “No GPS Data”.

I use HealthFit to connect my walking data to Strava where all my workouts are stored.

I’ve rebooted the watch to no avail. Time for a new one?

Walked again today and no GPS data in the Health Fit app. It does show in the Fitness app so the issue is not the watch but with HealthFit app. I have the latest version and will contact the developer.

I don’t use the Fitness app. It seems pretty useless.

I start a walking Workout on my Apple Watch. Some time after I’m done I and stopped the workout on the watch, I

click on the HealthFit app which transfers the workout to Strava and MapMyFitness. I use to select the Health app first but that didn’t seem to be necessary.

MapMyFitness displays the calories, duration and distance as does Strava but neither display a map, which they did previously. There a bunch of settings on the Watch app, like Fewer GPS readings (off), Auto Pause (off).

I also did a quick errand on my bike and used the watch. Ride was recorded on the Fitness App

and the Health App but not on Strava. No GPS. Seems pretty random.

I'm also using Health Fit to get all the workout statistics. In the past I also saw the "No GPS data" screen in this app, but that fixed itself somehow again.

The map data in Health app even show GPS data, where as the Fitness App just put dots during the Outdoor swim.

I don't use Strava, but I remember some users mentioning, that data exchanged between Apple and Strava has somehow become more restrictive.

This issue might not necessarily mean it's time for a new watch. A few things could be happening here.

First, make sure your watch has access to your location services. Sometimes, the permissions can get toggled off, even without you realizing it. On your iPhone, check that location services are enabled and that the Watch app has permission to access GPS.

Next, try resetting the network settings on your iPhone (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings) as it can sometimes affect GPS syncing between devices.

If that doesn't work, try unpairing and repairing the watch with your iPhone, as it can clear out any small glitches that might be causing the GPS data not to sync correctly.

If these steps don’t fix it, and since it’s a Watch 5, there could be a hardware issue with the GPS chip itself, but I’d recommend exhausting the software troubleshooting first before considering a replacement.
