Can I use my friend’s student ID for education discount in-store?

Hi! I’m planning to buy a Mac using the Apple education discount at an Apple Store. My friend is a university student and has a valid student ID. I'd like to use their ID for education discount.

Do they need to come with me in person to the Apple Store, or can I just bring their student ID and show it to the staff myself?
