My new MacBook Pro M4 won't recognize my external drive

I have a new MacBook Pro M4 purchased last April. At the time, I also bought the USB-A to Thunderbolt cord because my Seagate 5TB external harddisk used USB-A to connect to my previous MacBook Pro (2015 vintage). My new MacBook Pro won't recognize the external drive, which I use for backup. What is the solution?

launch Disk Utility, set the tiny "view" menu to show all devices" and look for the device.

What does it say about the device?
