Can I store Mac emails on an external hard drive?

I have a Mac mini running mac OS 15.1. Mail takes up 47.18 GB of disk space (internal HD capacity - 256 GB).

My question is: is it possible to have Mail store emails on a external HD rather than on the HD?

macOS doesn’t offer a built-in option to directly change the storage location for Mail.

You would need to manually relocate the Mail data (usually in your ~/Library/Mailfolder) to the external drive, then create a symbolic link (symlink) to trick the system into thinking the files are still on your internal drive.

However, be cautious!

Mail relies on that data to function, if the external drive is disconnected, it could cause issues. Make sure the external drive is always connected if you choose this route. Alternatively, you can consider archiving old emails to an external drive and leaving only the recent ones on your internal storage.
