I can't connect my old JBL Bluetooth speaker, the Mac sees it, connects but doesn't produce sound. Probably a different bluetooth spec. My studio beats cut in and out, to the point I just use my phone.

if it was me then I would test it with something else
got hold of some creative bluetooth speaker which behaved the same, and when I tested cunnecting it by the normal RCA audio input rather than bluetooth it was the same thing, so it was obvious that it was defect and not going to work, even though it bluetoothwise behaved as one would think it worked.
