Ventura operating system loads twice on my imac

When I turn on my imac ventura 13.7.6 loads. Then screen darkens and then it loads again. Then it asks for my password and I then start using safari to do my work. Then I log out. THEN the screen goes back to the first ventura that loaded and it comes up and asks for my password....then I have to log in again. I want to backup to a hard drive but if I do am I backing up everything or just the information from the #2 loaded things? I have looked at system usage on both ...they both show the same amount of usage. Any ideas on how to have JUST ONE VENTURA LOADED?

I just created a Time Machine back up and that was before I saw your message about re-enabling file vault. I am in the market for a new Mac since mine will not be supported more than a few months according to Apple and the upgrades on the operating systems they are talking about. Do you think I should reenable file vault on the one I have now or just Wait until I get my new one and enable it there?

While Ventura may no longer be supported by Apple and many third party developers, your existing apps will continue to function (especially the offline ones or components). The apps which have online components are the ones which will break sooner or later once those online services change. I'm still using Big Sur on one system with no issues yet, but it does vary by apps & services.

Filevault does protect your data in the event someone else gets physical access to your computer. Plus it makes it much easier to prepare it for sale or recycling since a simple erase will destroy the Filevault encryption key.
