My Apple Watch is not counting steps on walking pad

When wearing my Apple Watch on my wrist, I am using the fitness to track my workouts. I am using a walking pad & selecting the workout 'Indoor Walk'. It is not counting my steps as it should and it keeps thinking I am done with my workout but I am still walking/moving.

I am assuming this is happening because my wrist is on my keyboard and not by my side.

Is there a way to add a workout for walking pad & it counts my steps and not ask if I'm done with my workout until I am completely done?

Thanks for adding your experience, Carol! I thought it might be have been you who mentioned this but I couldn't quite remember.

Yes, it's me. For health reasons, most of my daily exercise is done on recumbents or while using a walker. My doctors want to see steps, not exercise rings so I've learned the tricks to capture them. Where there's a will, there's a way!
