Email downloading thousands of documents and freezing Mac

My email is downloading thousands of documents and ultimately freezing my Mac due to it eating over 22 Gb of memory. I have tried everything listed in the 2016-18 Community Support board dealing with this same issue, but it has not worked. Any help would be appreciated.
