Problem solved! Before you go through all the steps recommended by the Apple Community, try this, although the author claims this may not solve everyone's problem, depending on OS, devices, etc.

This worked for me, but I lost all of my folder icons in the Finder side bar.

How to fix iPod not syncing with macOS Ventura

  1. Open Activity Monitor
  2. Click in the search box
  3. Look for AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgentAMPDevicesAgent, or com.apple.amp.devicesui
  4. Whichever one you find first, double click to open it
  5. In the detail window that appears, choose Quit
  6. Then choose Force Quit
  7. Quit Activity Monitor
  8. In the Finder, choose the Go menu and Go to Folder...
  9. Enter this into the Go box, verbatim/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AMPDevices.framework/Versions/A/Support
  10. In the list of files in that folder there will be the one you force quit in Activity Monitor
  11. Double-click on that to start it running again

Note that you have to find that file this way. You can't just use Spotlight to look for, say, "AMPDeviceDiscoveryAgent."

Once you've run it, you can then plug your iPhone back into your Mac. It's not certain that this workaround solves the problem for everyone, but it is certainly fixing it for some.

Plugged my iPod into USB port in my Outback and it wiped out all of my music! When I attached to my iMac, it said I needed to restore my iPod, which I did. After that it would not sync with my Music, but did show in finder with the latest software update. So, I restarted in Safe Mode. Music recognized the iPod, but said I had to sync with the finder. The finder does not show the iPod icon, but rather an external disk icon. There is no option to sync with Music. Please help, I love my little iPod classic.
