Hi, I have just moved from High Sierra to Sequoia and am trying to use sftp from Terminal to transfer files to my website but I have been unable to make it work.
Please could anyone advise the format of the command necessary to login to the server?

The typical syntax would be
sftp username@serveraddress
for example
sftp karen@mysite.com
and then you should be asked to type your password.
An easier alternative is to use a problem like Cyberduck that lets you use a GUI instead of typing commands in Terminal.
Anyway, it will only work if you have the proper username and password, and the correct server address.
EDIT: I just tried a connection like above in Terminal, it connects but then it says "connection closed". Cyberduck, however, works.

There were many networking changes introduced in Sequoia.
Are you able to ssh into that remote host?

I don't know if it will solve your immediate issue; I would definitely include Terminal In Full Disk Access if you have not already done so...and compare your results.

Thanks for your reply. The server and my username have changed as the website has been moved. When I try to login now, terminal just hangs for a while and then I get 'Operation timed out' followed by 'Connection closed'. There was no option to input a password so I assume I am doing something wrong
I was just hoping someone could confirm the correct syntax. I am not quite clear from the manual command. I am more familiar using ftp but of course this is no longer supported.

I am now actually able to transfer files via the host's control panel but I would much prefer to do it via terminal. (And now I would also like to know why it doesn't work).

FWIW, I have tried using sftp in Terminal to connect to other servers, and it worked fine!
So it does work.
I can't say why it fails for some cases.
The the two servers that worked were macs (running different versions of macOS, one is Sequoia, the other one Ventura).
The one that failed for me I can't say for sure but is probably some version of Linux.
Hi, thanks for your reply. I just tried to sftp into my High Sierra Mac and that didn't work either so guess I will need to start there...
ssh fails with a connection refused on port 22. I notice the port number in the config file is commented out but currently I am not sure how to change that as I never (as far as I know) set a root password....
Any advice would be appreciated but no worries if not...

Thank you! Once I did that, I was able to connect, both ssh as sftp...
So I guess, the server hosting my website dos not have remote login enabled for me, so I guess I have no choice but to use the host's control panel...?

Port 22 is standard for SSH (and SFTP, I think). Shouldn’t meet to change it. Do you have Remote Login enabled on the High Sierra Sharing? That is what opens port 22.
