Apple Cares: Apple Pay Scam

Received a text:

Apple Cares: A charge of $141.23 was deducted from your Apple Id via Apple Pay. Call support executive at (84***537, if this was not made by you.

I called the number, I was not aware of all the scams going around about this. Talked to someone named Mark Walter employee id GD***498 call back number 31***504. He said the purchase was made at 5:51am for bitcoin. Then he brings up my iCloud wanted me to go into my phone and access my personal info and read it all back to him so he "could track the person down better." Sounded suspicious I hung up. I do not use Apple Pay, do not even know how.

Anyone else having this scam?

Very common scam. You are going to need to secure your accounts depending on what information you have given the scammer.

The rule to avoid any of these scams is to NEVER call a number or click a link in an email/message to provide personal information. Just by calling notifies them that you are susceptible to believing what they said and you will receive many more.

Other scams include:

  • FedEx/UPS claiming a package could not be delivered
  • Notice a outstanding toll charges that will result in a warrant if not paid
  • Claim that your account has been hacked and they are going to send pictures to your contacts if you do not pay them.
