How can I make Transparency mode work more reliable on AirPods Pro?

I seemed to have Transparency Mode working well on my AirPods Pro but suddenly a few days ago the Transparency Mode would come in 5-10 seconds then fail and appear to be in Noise Cancellation Mode for 5-10 seconds and go back and forth. Won’t stay in Transparency Mode. Trying different tips with no luck. Some chats actually talk of a little venting of tips as helping, other sources say total occlusion is needed.

This is my 5th pair of AirPods Pro and it is always failure of Transparency Mode that leads to calls with Apple Support and yet another new pair.

does ANYONE out there have any answers on how to get Transparency Mode to work reliably?

I had Transparency Mode working quite well before the last week. I had posted a series of settings that seemed to make Transparency Mode work much better.

Over the last week Transparency Mode had almost completely stopped working.

Tonight I did a thorough cleaning of the AirPods Pro and they are back to being quite reliable. It must be wax or debris getting into the microphones. It will still pop in and out of Transparency Mode but will be back after a few seconds.

The settings changes I used to improve them is as follows:

Fix#4 - Settings choose AirPods. Choose Transparency Mode

Turn off Personalized volume.

Turn off Conversation Awareness

Choose Hearing Assistance and turn Hearing Aid on.

Click on Adaptive Audio and put its slider to full right position.

Also: In Settings home page select Accessibility, then next page select Audio and Visual.

Select Headphone Accommodations click Audiogram then at bottom of screen click on Transparency Mode.

Next page click on Custom Transparency Mode. Then slide Ambient Noise Reduction full left .

After three years of frustration with Transparency Mode often cutting out back to Noise Cancellation mode. I realized the iPhone software is cutting out Transparency Mode when a new noise is sensed. With the settings above, it can blunt the Transparency Mode a few seconds but at least it comes right back.

I’ve scratched my head for 3 years why this kept  happening  despite cleaning, different ear tips, etc. it looks like this is the Transparency Mode fix!

I have also found turning off “Conversation Awareness” very helpful. It can cut off Transparency Mode for several second at a time and is intrusive.

My AirPods Hearing Assist and Transparency Mode are working beautifully now. I think regular cleaning, like every several weeks, is a key to their function. They are very complex and if any of the grills are dirty the whole system gets fouled up. It’s worth the time to clean them.

Hello Doctorpee,

I’ve never had an issue with Transparency Mode, but it sounds like it is a sensor and software issue.

I suggest resetting your AirPods. Press and hold the button on the back of your AirPods until the light on the front flashes amber, then goes back to white. Ensure your device is on the latest iOS version as well.

Sincerely,

Captain

I’ve been focussed on Transparency Mode for three years and Hearing Assistance the last year. Tweaking the settings and getting the AirPods Pro properly cleaned solve the problem. Apple replaced countless AirPods Pro before the cleaning protocol was made public.

I don’t think the iPhone has anything to do with the Transparency Mode issues.

I’ve reset them dozens of times and it makes no difference. There is a software issue with the AirPods Pro. Transparency Mode cuts out frequently when any noise in the room occurs. When the mics on the AirPods detect any noise in the room, Transparency Mode switches to Noise Cancellation. Renders the Hearing Assistance useless. I’ve tried dozens of different settings and adjustments but seemingly this glitch simply cannot be fixed.

These AirPods Pro have been repeatedly replaced when the Transparency Mode stops working. This latest pair worked beautifully the last 4-5 months but suddenly a week ago Transparency Mode would only work maybe 5-10 seconds , then the sound would get muffled and amplification gone, like they had switched to Noise Cancelling. I have repeatedly meticulously cleaned them, and have gone through every different ear piece to try ones more occlusive, less occlusive. No change. I have tried every combination of settings and nothing works. Of course I’ve reset the AirPods multiple times. This issue goes beyond the scope of your reply.

I have tried that repeatedly with no change. I’ve tried 7 different tips with no help. I’ve cleaned them thoroughly. Suddenly a week ago Transparency Mode stopped working. I can get a few seconds then it is muffled like Noise Cancellation Mode. They can no longer be used in Transparency Mode for hearing assistance. I should have an outstanding ticket on these buds since the last replacement.
