Automatic HEIC to JPG conversion not working in iOS 18.5 when downloading photos

I have a iPhone 14Pro, running ios18.5. The Automatic conversion is set in Settings. When copying the files to a PC they do not convert. Is this a known bug in the IOS? I know this worked as recently as 1 year ago. I have >1000 photos to download, so doing so one at a time is not an option.

Have you changed computers? Automatic means that Photos tries to send the best version to whatever machine is receiving the pictures. I don't know much about Windows, but I think that it tends to send jpg to Windows 10 and heic to Windows 11, but apparently you have to add something to Windows 11 for this to work. I don't know why. But this may help:

I noticed the same thing a few months ago When testing Windows 10 virtual machine on my Mac. That Windows 10 does not have any .heic support add-ons.

Previously .heic was automatically converted to .jpg but not anymore. I suspect upgrade to iPadOS 18 caused this.

A workaround is to set the iPhone shoot .jpg (and H.264) to begin with. I guess there should be Windows tools to batch convert .heic to .jpg?
