Mac battery went from 90%to 1% in just 6 hours..

I was just playing music overnight on my Mac like I do sometimes went to bed at 940pm and woke to silence around 3 AM to silence…

How did this happen? I always play music overnight the screen itself goes off after 5 minutes so… what’s the problem 🤷??

Yes, anything you can switch off will help you gain longer service (hours) from battery-only operation.

Reducing screen brightness will help. Turning off wi-fi and bluetooth will help. But killing services such as those may also disable other features like iCloud communication and file syncing. Be aware of apps that appear to be energy hogs. View energy consumption in Activity Monitor on Mac - Apple Support (CA)

If you want to get the longest lifespan (years) from the battery the best thing you can do is:

• Let the OS and charging circuits manage the charging.

• Plug in when using the computer near available power.

• Use on battery only when ac is unavailable.

• Don’t subject the computer and battery to extreme temperatures.

• Don’t allow the battery to regularly discharge deeply before plugging in. Yes, it may happen from time to time, just don't make it a habit.

• Don't obsess over battery life and/or health.

Well since about 7 this morning, i wasn’t using it very much at all. and it’s already down to 50%. Normally it would take an average 2 and half days. Minimum use take 5 days… But now.. something must’ve happened.. i think i have a theory. If you read my other posts like this one

Does alot of downloading put a strain on … - Apple Community

I’ve been doing a lot of downloading and transferring files to multiple pen drives, backing up stuff. Maybe all that action put a strain on the battery??

And i also put it on low battery power.. but only when running on battery power.

i usually do but i didn’t because i thought once press the red button at the upper left hand corner it’s closed. but i also find the app at the bottom bar on the screen. i recently discovered if you left click there’s a menu that includes “quit” and i click it and disappears from the bar. but aside from that, other apps have been open all this time and i didn’t even know it but it didn’t effect the battery before.

I’ve also been thinking what if i turn the wifi off at night? Do you that’ll save some battery power where it won’t discharge? i guess i could leave it plugged in but sometimes not very often i like to take it with me..

I agree with BobTheFisherman; leave the computer plugged in when ac power is available. If you have to go mobile, then of course you’ll have to run on the battery.

Keeping the computer connected to ac will have no detrimental effect on the battery.

Your utility app appears to show a drop in capacity from new to current of about 9% over two and a half years. Not bad. That damage is done, but I believe you can slow further decline by changing your habits.

With all this experience, I think I know what wear down the battery a lot. Downloading, importing and exporting stuff from/on USB pen drives and even syncing on your iPhone or iPad in which anytime you connect those, they're going to automaticaly charge. (using the battery power from your Mac to your iPhone and iPad.

That's just so happens what I do on it mostly. So it seems I have to adjust my Mac-charging habits to that. correct?
