Typing on the watch keypad is like engraving on a grain of rice. If my paired phone is signed in with my Apple ID, why does the watch require its own authentication?

Did you try to type the Apple Account password on the keyboard on your iPhone?
Make sure that on your iPhone in Settings/Notifications/Apple Watch keyboard is enabled.
Then bring your iPhone near the Apple Watch. When the watch asks for the Apple Account password, you should get a message on your iPhone, asking, if you want to use the iOS keyboard to type the password and send it to the Apple Watch.
This worked, but what was missing from the instructions was you have to touch the password box to enable the message to go to the iphone. then the message on the iphone only appears for a few seconds. you need to touch the message on the iphone to get the box to come up to enter the password. APPLE: this should be simpler.

I changed my settings for notifications from the Apple Watch to persistent on my iPhone. Then I was able to type my password on the iPhone. Now, the Apple Watch has had a spinner on the top right corner for about a minute, but I at least managed to type the password! 😅
